"Fools"

When they go to blaming God above,

For everything that’s wrong,

It gives me pause, I wonder,

How they can sing that song.

The fool who blasphemes Jesus,

Has that God-given choice,

But what a waste of intellect,

And unmitigated noise.

Unbelief might be trendy,

And put you briefly in the news,

But in the end unhealthy,

With way too much to lose.

‘Cause given the creation,

With its complicated beauty,

The design shows a designer,

And it is not my duty,

To convince someone who argues,

With what’s obvious, you see,

It’s just not worth the effort,

So I’ll just let them be.

The scriptures clearly say it,

One day all knees will bow,

And every tongue confess it,

We don’t know when or how.

But truth is it will happen,

And so we think it best,

To bow our knees to Christ before,

And His Lordship to confess.

Our God needs no defending,

So go ahead and scoff,

But we’ll go on believing,

And shake that old dust off.

And if we’re wrong about it,

You need not ever fear,

But if we’re right and you are wrong,

When the Lord draws near,

We pray you’ll find a reason,

To turn while you still can,

And by grace get a ticket,

To that happy, promised land.

“The fool has said in his heart, ‘There is no God.’ They are corrupt, they have committed abominable deeds; there is no one who does good.” (Psalm 14:1, NAS)

The diagnosis is sobering. Only a fool would deny God’s existence, but the those who would claim that their problem with God is intellectual do not see themselves accurately. The Psalmist goes on to describe the immorality of those who are gripped by unbelief. In the end, it’s really not an intellectual problem after all. It is a moral issue. If we admit the possibility that there is a God and the Bible is true, our behavior is indited. We have corrupt hearts and abominable deeds. The good news is that God provides a solution to the solution He has diagnosed. It is the sacrifice and resurrection of His son.

Lord, help us turn from our foolishness and acknowledge You, in Jesus’ name.
