"Fourth"

A summer evenin’, hot and dry,

The twilight bids the day good-bye,

The crickets sing, the fireflies glow,

It slips away, the time must go.

Not much happened on this day,

Not life-changing, I would say,

But I’ll confess I’m thankful, see,

For the Good Lord letting me,

Travel to a nearby town,

Where only smiles and not a frown,

A-horseback through the streets we made,

A fourth of July big parade.

And I saw there all colors, too,

Young and old, all crowded through.

To clap and wave red, white and blue,

And all who gathered showed they knew,

That America is simply us,

And we can overcome the fuss,

Of those who want to bring us down,

And it will start in these small towns.

Where people learn to get along,

And everyone knows right from wrong,

And folks will bow their heads and pray,

And give God thanks at close of day.

I think just maybe I was wrong,

‘Cause what I saw today was strong,

The hope that we can find our way,

Small town Independence Day.

“I will call to You whenever I’m in trouble, and You will answer me…” (Psalm 86:7, NLT)

The Psalmist gladly acknowledges that in times of trouble he will call on the Lord and expect Him to answer. The problems of our nations are serious, but not without solutions. If we are willing to call upon the Lord and humbly seek His help with our troubles, He will answer us. Don’t let prayer be a last resort, when all else fails sort of thing. Let calling on the Lord be the first thing we do when trouble challenges us. Now is the time to pray as never before.

Lord, teach us the importance of calling upon You to help us in times of trouble, in Jesus’ name.
