"Heroes"

Unnamed and mostly they’re unsung,

The heroes of this day,

We appreciate the veterans,

And thanks to them we say.

They served in distant places,

Wherever they were sent,

Defenders of our freedom,

When asked that’s why they went.

Some sacrificed their very lives,

Others crippled by attack,

Shed their blood for us at home,

And did not make it back.

They only say they did their jobs,

When we try to give them praise,

Humbly point to those who died,

Old Glory’s banner raise.

And my Dad was one of those,

Who fought to keep us free,

Against the German forces strong,

In World War II you see.

And like the ones before and since,

Who gladly served and gave,

We have our veterans to thanks,

Our way of life to save.

God bless you for the price you paid,

God bless you, one and all,

For every sacrifice you made,

You answered freedom’s call.

“So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed.” (John 8:36, NAS)

Those who have served our nation deserve our thanks for the sacrifices they made for the cause of political freedom. Many suffered and died to insure that America remains the free-est nation on earth and a beacon of hope for the world. The spiritual parallel is undeniable when we think of what Jesus did to purchase our spiritual freedom. His death and resurrection paid for both abundant and eternal life. We are thankful for our veterans. We are most thankful for Jesus, who makes us free indeed.

Lord, thank You for the gift of freedom, in Jesus’ name.
