"I Look"
I look ‘cross Texas pastures,
And through my horse’s ears,
Thoughts go through my memory,
I haven’t thought in years.
Like the honeysuckle growin’,
‘Long the hedgerows of my youth,
And those lazy Bama breezes,
Long before I knew the truth,
‘Bout how the world’s a heartbreak,
For the cowboy dreamin’ crew,
And so many things I wanted,
Seemed they never would come true.
But this horseback boy out-lasted,
All the grief and loss and pain,
And I still want to saddle up,
And do it all again.
I know why I’m still livin’,
While other folks have died,
And some have all but given up,
So in you I’ll confide,
It’s all because the Lord is good,
And He called me by name,
And when He did so long ago,
I’ve never been the same.
The energy to get back up,
From every time I fell,
The strength to keep on hoping,
Though at times no one could tell,
That I was close to ending it,
But Jesus stayed my hand,
And I’ll always be thankful,
I wear His Kingdom’s brand.
Astride this little spotted mare,
I’ll take more rides, you see,
‘Cause so far I have survived,
What life has thrown at me.
Not perfect, far from normal,
But still a cowboy dream,
And I ‘spect to the very end,
His grace will be my theme.
“My soul waits in silence for God only; from Him is my salvation. He only is my rock and my salvation, my stronghold; I shall not be greatly shaken.” (Psalm 62:1-2, NAS)
There are moments when we cannot see God working in our lives. But when we look back on life’s seasons we see that He was with us all the way. My life has had many dramatic changes, and some of them were very hard to bear. But God has been faithful to give me the grace I needed when I needed it. He secures us and helps us to keep going, even when we are unsure of the outcome. I have come full circle from my early cowboy years to that lifestyle once again. God is good and Jesus is Lord, here in the heart of Texas.
