"Some Horses"
Some horses that I really liked,
Their bloodline no one knew,
They came to us already grown,
And workin’ cattle, too.
And see, that’s how Dad did it,
He’d ship some gelding in,
We’d ride to see if he would work,
No matter where he’d been.
And if he pitched or wouldn’t turn,
Or wouldn’t watch a cow,
He was done and sold real quick,
We hardly trained one how.
And that’s because Dad thought of them,
As just a worker’s tool,
Said you don’t ride the papers,
Nor put up with a fool.
And so we rode good horses,
Their fine behavior showed,
With not too many problems,
And hardly ever throwed.
And not until the decades passed,
Did we ever raise our own,
And even from the grade mares,
Raised colts till they were grown.
And, yes, their breeding matters,
But when papers can’t be found,
Don’t think too much about it,
Keep that good horse around.
And methinks there’s a lesson,
It’s not my pedigree,
But grace that makes the difference,
Christ’s blood was shed for me.
And not because I’m special,
In fact, no more you see,
Than anyone who calls on Him,
He’s glad to set us free.
I may just be a grade horse,
With no papers here to show,
But in His book He wrote my name,
And that’s enough to know.
“Nothing evil will be allowed to enter, nor anyone who practices shameful idolatry and dishonesty- but only those whose names are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life…” (Revelation 21:27, NLT)
The world is filled idolatry and dishonesty, but it will not be that way in God’s eternal kingdom. No evil will be allowed to enter, but only those whose names are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life. How does one know if their name is written there? It certainly doesn’t depend upon anything we have earned or deserve. It’s all about receiving the grace Jesus died and was raised to give us. If we receive that grace by faith, He writes our name there. You might even say it’s written in blood. What a relief! Jesus once told His disciples not to rejoice so much about the evil spirits being subject to them, but rather that their names were written in heaven. That’s something to rejoice about!
Lord, help us know, beyond any doubt, that our names are written in Your book, in Jesus’ name.
