"Sure"

Surprised that some will not admit,

That they are just not sure,

About their own salvation,

‘Cause they feel so insecure,

About their destination,

Whether heaven or to hell,

Their feelings are uncertain,

It’s hard for them to tell,

If their doubts are saying,

That they’re in but not so sure,

Or if they’re out completely,

And just haven’t found God’s cure.

The Spirit wants to tell them,

That they fully belong,

He will give His witness,

Within them speaking strong.

But the only way to get there,

Is to surrender all control,

It’s the only answer,

To be certain in your soul.

The Spirit of adoption,

Will drive out all our fear,

And we can call God “Daddy,”

And that is very clear.

Let go the reins, my brother,

And, sis, surrender all,

And you can know assurance,

With all who on Him call.

“The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God.” (Romans 8:16, NAS)

The spirit is the deepest part of who we are, and that is where God communicates assurance. if it was simply intellectual, we would try to out-guess it. If it was just emotional, our certainty would fluctuate with our moods. If it was something we could just be more determined about, our inconsistent choices would rob us of all peace. This is deeper than any of these things. It is a spiritual, not soulish, assurance. The Spirit mysteriously, miraculously tells us that we belong. And by surrendering to the Lord, we trade control for assurance. How did God make you sure you’re saved?

Lord, assure us, in Jesus’ name.
