"Untrained"
A-pawing by the trailer,
And steady dancin’ ‘round,
Occasionally she’s neighing,
And makin’ snorty sound.
And frankly it’s embarrassing,
I wish she’d simply hush,
Behave herself much better,
And I don’t mean to fuss,
But she seems like she’s come untrained,
And marish all the way,
And when another horse comes near,
She’s pinned her ears all day.
I just need to work her more,
In the round pen and outside,
Remind her of the basics,
And in you I’ll confide,
Sometimes I think God looks at me,
Like I look at that mare,
And wonders why I’ve come untrained,
With ears pinned back right there.
And then back to the basics,
He works me through my need,
Does it ‘cause He loves me,
And wants to see me freed,
Of habits that are harmful,
And strongholds that should break,
I know the Lord is faithful,
To do just what it takes,
To help me and to use me,
On this earth’s daily ride,
Will always grace humility,
And He’ll resist all pride.
“…the Lord disciplines those He loves…” Hebrews 12:6, NIV)
God’s discipline is a sign that He loves us. Discipline, by nature, can be a painful experience but it’s worth it. Why? Because it’s part of the transforming process by which we partake in God’s holiness and peace. Every lesson makes us more like Jesus, and though challenging, gives us a greater understanding of God’s grace and purpose for our lives. The discipline of the Lord also does what loving discipline does for every child: it brings great security.
Lord, teach us, in Jesus’ name.
