"What Counts"

If there’s a way to do it,

I try real hard to find,

I’m always on a schedule,

Don’t want to get behind.

But sometimes I get to feelin’,

I’ll never get it done,

And maybe won’t have much to show,

For my lifelong run.

That can sure depress me,

Troubles me down deep,

I feel like I have lots to do,

And promises to keep.

I write a line, I make a post,

I pray a prayer and then,

I try to get this place in shape,

From how it’s always been.

But when I think of all the work,

And all the time I’ve spent,

I wonder how much really counts,

And where the time all went.

The children grown and far away,

Can’t see the grandkids much,

But, yes, I call and visit,

And try to stay in touch.

Some friends have surprised me,

Guess they need me less,

We walked through things together,

When they were in distress.

Others close and forged in fire,

They never miss a beat,

We reminisce and give God thanks,

Our fellowship is sweet.

Forgive my old man rambling,

But suffice to say,

Jesus is the Lord of life,

And blesses everyday.

And He will be the Judge you see,

Of everything we do,

We can trust His fairness,

He’s compassionate and true.

We didn’t come this far to fail,

Or miss what God has planned,

Important in each season,

To keep our fire fanned.

He’ll never leave, forsake us,

He’s faithful through and through,

Filled with the Holy Spirit,

He’ll show us what to do.

“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, and I have remained faithful.” (2 Timothy 4:7, NIV)

Paul’s testimony was that he was going to finish strong. He could see the end of his life, and knew that God had energized him to be faithful. Isn’t that what all of us want? In spite of our failings and detours, God helps us to stay on track and serve Him till the end. Paul said that God had a prize waiting on him at the end of the race and that same reward was for all who eagerly look forward to the Lord’s appearing. Whatever we experienced on the way, it will all be worth it. Fight on.

Lord, help us finish strong, in Jesus’ name.
